The Apotheosis of Washington
The Apotheosis of Washington fresco is painted on the ceiling of the United States of America's Capitol Rotunda. This is an excellent example of Victorian Era Greco-Roman symbolism painting by Italian artist Constantino Brumidi.
Centrally, it depicts George Washington flanked by Liberty & Victory crowned by the 13 State maidens. They are surrounded by 6 symbolic groupings representing War, Science, Marine, Commerce, Mechanics and Agriculture. The historical Roman Republic Gods of each genre are teaching our founding people their specialized traits.
This work of fine art was commissioned to be in harmony with the Neoclassical architecture of the Washington, DC Capitol Hill District.
